The image of the boy sitting on his father’s tractor with his dad close by is set against the peaceful background of a field on the family’s farm. This original oil painting is based on a combination of family photos taken years ago. I began with a sketch to establish composition, pose, style, scene and lighting. Then I created color studies to establish the mood of the painting. The final 18” x 24” portrait was painted with Artisan Oil Paints on stretched canvas. After framing, my client plans to give the portrait to his father as a Christmas gift! Be sure to post a comment below to let us know what you think.

Here is a image of the final painting.
Grounds for sculpture is a 35-acre public sculpture park with amazing visuals around every corner. The entire park is an experience from the temporary indoor exhibit, to the over sized outdoor sculptures to the tiny hidden artworks. The park has a mystical feeling to it.

We started the morning off with brunch at Rats, a beautiful restaurant located in the park. Even brunch was an experience with delicious food in a magical setting.

After brunch we walked the 35 acres in 95 degree heat and it was worth every step. Only next time we’ll try to remember to bring water with us. The park has many paths that lead you through the woods, a lake, bamboo forests, hidden paths and indoor exhibits. The sculptures include a wide range of styles, sizes, mediums and concepts. Many of the sculptures are interactive, but be sure to read the signs as many are not. The park certainly was planned out well and really builds quite an experience. Sculpture styles included futuristic, realistic, classic, abstract, impressionistic, bizarre to even voyeuristic.

If you’ve been there before, let me know your experience, or let me know if you go!

Here are some pictures to give you a glimpse of the park.

The fair is held at the Sussex County Fair Grounds. It was big and quite impressive. It’s held both indoors and outdoors throughout the barns.

I made a point of attending this year as I was considering participating this year or next. I found the whole experience very nice. There was a very large amount of vendors and most of them were very high end. They had everything from sculptors, painters, photographers, crafters, jewelers, apparel, to housewares. I spent some time checking out each booth. Not only did the art impress me, but the booth set ups were a good inspiration as well.

I’m still debating whether to show next year at the fair. It’s very craft centric and I’ve been warned not to try and sell paintings at a craft show. What do you think?

Here are some indoor shots of the fair I took with my phone. Sorry for the low quality.

Murray Hill was the second painting I created for this series of my fine art, but it was the first painting I finished. The first painting wasn’t finished until 7 paintings later.

At the time I was living in Manhattan and walked to work everyday through the streets of Murray Hill and Midtown. One day this particular building was glowing from the sunlight coming through the trees. It illuminated the yellow building and drew my attention right in. I fell in love with the way the light and shadow danced on the facade of the building. I’m a sucker for old textured buildings that show their history with cracks and imperfections. Well, I ran back to my apartment and grabbed my camera. I took at least one roll of film shooting the landscape from different angles. After developing the film, the scene didn’t hit me the same way. So, when I painted the scene, I tried to recall the feeling and impression I was hit with when painting it. Once the painting was finished it became an instant hit amongst friends. This inspired me to paint several scenes of light and shadow upon urban architecture.

About two months after the painting was finished, I passed by the site where the building is and everything was all wrong. They cut down both trees in the scene and they were refacing the building. It crushed me a little, but I was happy to have it preserved in my painting. You can still find the building in the Murray Hill area, but I’m sorry to say… it’ll never be the same as I saw it.
